See a Doctor from the Comfort of your Couch!

I previously wrote a blog in regards to which facility would be appropriate when seeking medical attention. I described different ailments and the different options to receive care. Most importantly, I discussed the alternatives to running off to the emergency room and compared costs of different facilities.

Last week, when speaking with a patient, I inquired why he went to the emergency room for bronchitis. His response to me was “because the wait time at the urgent care was too long.”  While giving him credit for attempting to go to an appropriate, lower cost facility (urgent care) for his illness, this was a great opportunity for me to introduce a new option in health care to him. It is called Live Health OnLine and it was developed by WellPoint. It is a web-based site that you can actually have a face to face visit with a physician. That’s correct…you can now see a doctor for an acute illness over the internet and you can do this from the luxury of just about anywhere.

Live Health OnLine is another option for patients to see a physician and is one that can be accessed from their couch, cubicle at work or basically anywhere on-the-go. All that is needed is a webcam – therefore, all smart phones, ipads and most laptops have this capability. The neat thing about this program is that you can speak to a physician, via webcam 24/7 from any remote location.  Imagine never getting out of your pajamas and being able to see a doctor. Imagine not having any sick time to take off of work and being able to see a physician from your cubicle.

Ailments that can be handled over this website are colds, coughs, urinary tract infections – things that would require an antibiotic, or maybe even just even provide piece of mind. Obviously, the doctor cannot actually listen to your lungs or check your pulse, but he or she has been trained to do assessments using a webcam. If they feel that they will not be able to assist your medical issue, they will direct you to the appropriate resource and most times, you won’t even be charged for that visit. It only takes a few minutes to register and the average wait time to see a physician is only 3 minutes! Once logged in, you can see which physicians are available and view their bios to determine who would be the best fit for you. These physicians are located throughout the country and work many different hours to provide the 24/7 coverage. All physicians are licensed to prescribe medications in the state of Ohio, so you would be able to see a physician, describe your ailments and have a prescription sent to the pharmacy of your choice, all within minutes. In fact, during registration, you have the option to enter in the pharmacy information so that it can be stored for future reference.

Live Health OnLine is only for the acute illnesses, nothing chronic. Therefore, no narcotics or lifestyle medications are allowed to be prescribed. The cost of this service is only $49 and your credit or debit card information can be taken securely over the internet.  Some insurance companies, like Anthem, have Live Health OnLine as part of their benefit package, so only the traditional copay would be expected at the time of service. Either way, this visit will occur faster and at a much lower cost than a trip to the emergency room. Follow the links below to find out more information and get registered today!
